Kids and K-9s for Healthy Choices is for all kids and families who want a healthier life style.
The program is a comprehensive life skills package. It includes lessons on nutrition, exercise, civic responsibilities, pet care, self esteem and family connectedness. The program coordinates invited speakers, such as veterinarians, pediatricians, psychologists and nutritionists. It encourages healthy choices and behaviors in a positive and fun environment. The kids will participate in activities that will strengthen their relationship with their new furry friend, their family, and their community.
The
program structure can be altered to fit any community setting. For
example, an after school program with a similar curriculum (provided by
Kids and K-9s).
Specifics
-
Each family will choose a dog from an animal shelter that is compatible with their family members and living situation.
-
The kids will be required to walk the dog twice per day for 30 minutes each walk.
-
One of the walks must be with a family member (mother, father, grandparent, brother, sister, aunt, uncle, guardian, etc.).
-
The kids will keep a log of the number of steps they walk (by wearing a pedometer) and of whom they walk with.
-
The kids will attend dog obedience training and care classes. The program coordinators or invited guests will involve the kids in lessons that will encompass health, exercise, self-esteem, responsibility, food, and fun!
-
The families will be asked to bring a healthy snack/recipe that they have learned about and share it with the class during these meetings.
-
Parents will be asked to save their food receipts for the month. At the end of each month, they will be reviewed and healthy choices will be rewarded and/or healthy alternatives will be suggested.
As
part of a new collaboration with Heart Smart Kids, information
regarding participant's exercise and nutrition habits and height,
weight, and blood pressure measurements will be recorded. Please see the
"Links" tab for more information on the Heart Smart Kids organization.
The information collected will remain strictly confidential and will
only be used for research purposes on the health benefits of the
program and dog ownership.
