Kids and K-9s for Healthy Choices is for all kids and families
who want a healthier life style.

The program offers a comprehensive life skills package. It includes lessons on nutrition, exercise, proper pet care, and self esteem. The program coordinates guest speakers such as veterinarians, pediatricians, psychologists, dog trainers and handlers, and service dogs who help encourage healthy choices and behaviors in a positive and fun environment. The kids will participate in activities that will strengthen their relationship with their furry friends, their family, and their community.

Specifics

- Participants attend regular sessions which include lessons on nutrition, exercise, and dog care, a planned physical activity, guest speakers, and a healthy snack. Activity books are available for participants, parents, and teachers.

- Participants are encouraged to walk with a family member, friend, and/or a dog outside of these lessons.

- Participants will be asked to track their physical activity and answer questions about their eating and exercise knowledge and habits.

- Human-dog interactions will be included in some of the sessions and will be strongly encouraged outside of the sessions (through the adoption of a dog or increased exercise with a dog for previous dog owners).

The program structure can be altered to fit any community setting and is currently operational in an after school format.
